Scoliosis Surgery Q & A

What are the symptoms of scoliosis?
Signs of possible scoliosis include:

  • Uneven shoulders, or shoulder blades that stick out
  • One shoulder blade that appears more prominent than the other
  • An uneven waist
  • Uneven hips
  • A head that is off center
  • The whole body is leaning to one side

If you notice one or more of these signs in yourself or your child, make an appointment with Dr. Rogers for an accurate diagnosis.

What are the treatment options for scoliosis?

Most of the time scoliosis is mild and may require frequent monitoring, but not treatment. However, in severe cases, the curvature of the spine can reduce the space within the chest and make it difficult to breathe properly. When treatment is necessary, it typically entails:

  • Bracing.
A brace is only effective in children and adolescents whose skeletal structure is still growing. It will not correct curvature that already exists, but is designed to prevent the curve from further progression. A brace, usually made of plastic and contoured to fit your child’s body, fits snugly under clothing. The more hours the brace is worn, the more effective it is.
  • Surgery.
Surgery is reserved for severe cases, typically considered a curvature of the spine that is greater than 40 degrees. The most common surgery used to correct scoliosis is spinal fusion. In this procedure, Dr. Rogers places fragments of bone or a bone-like material between the vertebra. Metal rods are also inserted to hold that portion of the spine straight, as the existing bone and new fragments fuse together.
